Community members have asked how they can be an advocate for our work. Here’s an opportunity to do so! The HHS has asked for input to develop the criteria that will be used to select projects for KidneyX prizes. As you all know, The Kidney Project is developing an implantable bio-artificial kidney that provide benefits beyond dialysis.

The implantable artificial kidney will avoid the use of immunosuppression drugs (no anti-rejection medications), enable complete mobility (freedom to travel), and lift diet restrictions (eat and drink freely). With sufficient support (funding), we anticipate that the implantable artificial kidney can get to patients in 5 years or less. Our device is intended to be surgically implanted, not require batteries or electrical power, and have no external connections through the skin.
It’s important that HHS hears from our community that these characteristics –

• no anti-rejection medications
• freedom to travel, eat and drink freely
• no external through-skin connections for power or dialysate, and
• the possibility to get to patients within 5 years
are important considerations.
