A
byproduct of the work on The Kidney Project is the development of
iHemo. In this system, we use the hemofilter for the bioartificial
kidney to create a permanent interface for implantable hemodialysis. The
iHemo simplifies dialysis by eliminating the need for needle-based
blood access. As shown in the figure below, the implanted hemofilter is
attached to the patient’s blood vessels and connected to an external
dialysate pump through a catheter to filter out blood toxins. The iHemo
is a stepping stone on the way to the fully realized implantable
bioartificial kidney.--> VISIT PROJECT
