Calgary doctor researching effects of exercise during dialysis

Just like nearly 1,200 Calgarians battling kidney disease, Flordeliza Mutuc receives lengthy dialysis treatments three times every week.
In order to clean her body of toxins, the cheerful 65-year-old is connected to dialysis for four hours at each session, remaining seated as a machine takes her blood, cleanses it and pumps it back into her body.
But like more patients around her at the Sheldon Chumir Kidney Clinic, Mutuc is using two of those four hours to exercise her body.
“I really love it. It makes me feel so much better, I have so much more energy, and I can do more things with my kids and with my grandkids,” said Mutuc, who recently retired from her job at a seniors care centre.
“I don’t want to just sit here and sleep or watch TV. I want to exercise because it feels so good.”
As part of a new program combining kinesiology with nephrology, patients at the kidney clinic now have access to the Stel’Air Medical Pedal machine, allowing them to exercise their lower body while they receive dialysis.
Depending on the location of their dialysis tubes, some patients can also exercise their arms and hands using light weights, squeeze balls or power webs for their fingers.
